Happy new year to you all. Things have been abit quiet at Woodway Farm over the last few weeks as some of the horses have been suffering from abit of a bug, this however seems to have passed now and things are looking to be back on track!
Universal Soldier made his chasing debut on Saturday in the 3 mile beginners' chase at Uttoxeter. Both owner and trainer were very pleased with his performance. He was slightly hampered at the first fence when a horse jumped across him and one fell. He was looking good when slithering on landing at the 11th and losing momentum but quicly recovered. He stayed on well after the last and was only a length down at the finish to Chariot Charger who had shown some useful form over fences prior to that, finishing second behind the likes of Bensalem, The Nightingale and Bakbenscher. This gives us something to build on, hes come out of the race well and would have matured a lot for it.
On 16th August we took 2 runners to Worcester evening meeting.Shammy Buskins ran in the 3 mile novice hurdle after it was decided that he would benefit from the switch to hurdles as the handicapper had a grasp on him over fences. He raced prominently throughout and ran on under pressure on the flat to win by 1 1/4 lengths. Andrew Thornton gets on very well with Shammy Buskins who can be a tricky ride as shown in previous races where he has been awkward at the start. Both he and Alan seem to have the measure of him now and both myself and the owners were very pleased with his run. Shammy Buskins owner Phil Morgan was not only delighted by the result but also that he made headlines of the next days Racing Post...........

Our second runner of the evening was Chapolimoss ridden by Aidan Coleman. Chapolimoss was bought from the May Doncaster Bloodstock sales and ran disappointingly first time out for us at Worcester when he struggled to quicken in a slowly run 2 1/2 mile hurdle. Upped in trip to 2m7f, the plan was to hold him up in the early stages which Aidan did. He jumped very well, which is what we have seen at home from him, and went on to win easily by 9 lengths. This has renewed our faith in the horse that was showing huge promise at home and hopefully he has shown us his true form and is an exciting prospect for the yard!
Its been a while since the last update so lots to cover......
Going back to 18th June and the yards first runner at Royal Ascot! Font ran in the Queen Alexandra stakes and despite being up against it in the weights ran a big race to finish 6th under Richard Kingscote. This was a creditable performance from a horse who was last seen on the flat in October 2007 and bodes well for his summer jumping campaign which started off well with a win at Fontwell on 11th May.

Myself and daughter Gaby in our finery at Royal Ascot
Mr Valentino ran at Worcester on 29th and our confidence in him going on previous form was reflected in the betting with an SP of 25/1! He was pulled up in his last 2 starts at the beginning of 2011 and his training had suffered several interruptions from minor problems ever since however, he had been dropped 16lbs since going into handicaps. He looked to be going nowhere and tailed off down the far side but David Bass did not give up and thanks to his perseverance the horse ran on to win comfortably by 1 1/2 lengths. This was a fantastic ride by David Bass who has ridden and schooled the horse alot at home. I was very pleased for his owner Alan Marsh who has been very patient with Mr Valentino and it appears to have paid off. He avoided a penalty for this win so was technically 6lbs well in when run again at Worcester a week later. He ran a very similar race as before, coming off the pace with a winning chance but veered left at the last and lost ground to allow the winner to go by. Still very pleased with the run and hes showing a marked improvement in performance from the beginning of the year.
On the 4th July Safe Investment made his first appearance for us after being bought out of the Ben Pollock yard In May. Aidan Coleman, who had ridden him previously when in training with Ben, was aboard for the 2m6f handicap hurdle. He jumped well apart from a lack of fluency at the last but Aidan reported that he didnt travel as well as he had hoped he would. He did however make up ground down the back to draw clear in the straight and win by 8 lenghts. In a bid to defy the handicapper we ran him again at Southwell on Sunday 10th. The rain softened ground didnt seem to bother him with Aidan easing up in the closing stages to win easily by 23 lengths. A hike up in the weights now is imminent but he is a smart horse in good form so hopefully more to come from him. For all of you that bought the last ever edition of the News of the World, in the hope that in years to come it will be a collectors item, may have seen their nap of the day............t.co/WcpHx0j. Not only did they have huge faith in Safe Investment they also described yours truly as a 'glamorous' - who said the NOWT was all lies?!
Whilst Alan was at Southwell with Safe Investment I was at Stratford in the sunshine with Smart Freddy running in the novice hurdle and new recruit, Pelennor in the Conditional Jockeys race. Smart Freddy, who won last time out at Southwell, was always up with the leaders and jumped well throughout. He kept finding more under pressure in the closing stages to win by 1/2 to Hes Our Lad who was hampered 2 out. Both owner and trainer were pleased with his performance and he will now have a well earned break.
After a win on Smart Freddy David Bass was soon bought back down to earth with a very large bump when the well backed Pelennor made a bad mistake at the 4th unseating David and bringing the horse down on top of him. He was as expected very sore afterwards but luckily no serious damage was done and I am pleased to report that I have heard from him this morning and hes back riding out. From the way the race panned out had he stayed on his feet he would have had a very good chance.
Aghill made the long journey to Sedgefield worth while on 13th June with a very impressive run in the 3m3 handicap hurdle. His jumping was brilliant throughout and a well timed ride by Aidan Coleman saw him go clear on the run in and win easily by 9 lengths. This was Aghill's first outing from Woodway Farm after being purchased at DBS in April, both owner and trainer were very pleased with his perfomance.

The month got off to a good start started with a game run from Betavix at Worcester on the 4th. This was only his 2nd start under rules having also had 3 runs point to points including a win at our local course, Kingston Blount, last year. Betavix, owned by Mike Tuckey, ran a very pleasing race staying on gamely to win by 5 lengths.
On 7th June we took 3 runners to Southwell. King Ozzy ran well in the 2m4 handicap hurdle and finished 3rd in what was a slightly stiffer task than his previous run at Bangor. Smart Freddy put up a very impressive performance in the 2m novice chase and cruised home with a 27 length lead on the rest of the field under jockey David Bass. Mzuri Bay had his first run for the yard in the 3m novice hurdle. Unfortunately the race bore more resemblance to a bumper after 7 hurdles were ommitted which did not suit Mzuri Bay at all. He finished 3rd but i dont think this is a true representation of what the horse has to offer and look forward to his next run.

King Ozzy ridden by David Bass and in the winners enclosure with members of the Ace of Diamonds Partnership.
King Ozzy, owned by the Ace of Diamonds Partnership, triumphed in the 2m17 handicap hurdle at Bangor on the 14th May. This was his first outing from Woodway Farm after being bought out of the Martin Keighley yard. He jumped and travelled well throughout to win by 3/4 length.
Font ran in the 2m4f at Fontwell in the colours of Simon Florey who is leasing the horse for the summer. This was his first run for the yard after being purchased in March from the the Paul Nicholls yard. He jumped very well under Harry Skelton who had ridden the horse before and had been out to school him the day previous. He kept him handy and searched out the better ground which seem to suit the horse who went clear and was in command 2 out, hung right in the closing stages but kept on to win by 2 1/4 lengths. Hes been in great form at home and, a change in scenery teamed with better ground and a slight step down in class has really benefited him.
Sarahs Gift started the new season on a high when winning the 2m 5 handicap chase at Fakenham on 25th April. Under Gina Andrews, the ladies point to point championship leader, he was ridden to lead before 2 out and went clear between the last 2. He kept on well, easing towards the finish to win by 5 lengths.
